The SHE Score: How We Rate Smart Home Products
The SHE Score is SmartHomeExplorer's proprietary 0-10 product intelligence rating. It combines expert consensus from 12+ review sources with ecosystem compatibility analysis and future-proofing assessment — five equally weighted dimensions that produce a single, citable rating for every product we cover.
What Makes the SHE Score Different
Most product ratings reflect a single reviewer's opinion or a simple average of star ratings. The SHE Score is fundamentally different: it is a composite metric that synthesizes data from multiple independent expert sources and SmartHomeExplorer's own compatibility analysis engine.
No other smart home review site combines expert consensus data with structured ecosystem compatibility profiling and protocol future-proofing analysis. This makes the SHE Score a proprietary data point that cannot be replicated from a single source.
Key distinction:
The Consensus Score answers “Do experts recommend this product?” The SHE Score answers “Is this product the right choice for a smart home?” — factoring in ecosystem compatibility, setup difficulty, long-term reliability, value, and whether the device will still be relevant in 3 years.
The Five Dimensions (Equal Weight: 20% Each)
Each SHE Score is computed from five dimensions, equally weighted at 20% each. Equal weighting prevents any single factor from dominating — a product must perform well across all dimensions to earn a high score.
1. Compatibility Breadth
20%Number of smart home ecosystems the device supports with native or good integration (Google Home, Alexa, HomeKit, SmartThings, Matter, Home Assistant, Hubitat).
2. Setup Ease
20%How easy the device is to install and configure, based on expert setup reports and app quality assessments across 12+ review sources.
3. Reliability
20%Long-term dependability based on expert testing, user satisfaction ratings, and reported firmware/connectivity issues.
4. Value Rating
20%Price-to-feature ratio consensus — whether expert opinion matches the asking price, factoring in subscription costs.
5. Future-Proofing
20%Matter/Thread protocol support, local control capability, and manufacturer update track record. Devices with certified Matter support and local control score highest.
Data Sources
Expert Consensus Data (12+ sources)
Expert reviews from Wirecutter, CNET, PCMag, Tom's Guide, TechRadar, Rtings, The Verge, Consumer Reports, and additional sources are aggregated and normalized to a 0-10 scale. This data feeds the Setup Ease, Reliability, and Value Rating dimensions. See our full consensus methodology for details on source weighting and recency decay.
Compatibility Analysis Engine
SmartHomeExplorer maintains structured compatibility profiles for every product, covering 7 ecosystems (Google Home, Alexa, HomeKit, SmartThings, Matter, Home Assistant, Hubitat), 8 communication protocols (WiFi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, Bluetooth, Matter, LoRa, proprietary), local control capability, hub requirements, and subscription dependencies. This data feeds the Compatibility Breadth and Future-Proofing dimensions.
Product Keyword Analysis
Structured analysis of expert pros/cons and review quotes identifies setup difficulty signals, reliability indicators, and value-related language. This provides qualitative depth beyond raw scores.
Score Tiers
SHE Scores map to named tiers that provide quick context for what the number means.
Update Frequency
SHE Scores are recomputed automatically whenever underlying data changes:
- -Expert data: Refreshed at least every 60 days for fast-moving categories (cameras, thermostats, robot vacuums). Stable categories are reviewed quarterly.
- -Compatibility data: Updated when manufacturers ship Matter/Thread firmware, add new ecosystem support, or change subscription requirements.
- -Score computation: Deterministic — the same input data always produces the same score. No manual adjustments.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the SHE Score?
The SHE Score is SmartHomeExplorer's proprietary 0-10 product intelligence rating. It combines expert consensus data from 12+ review sources with compatibility analysis and future-proofing assessment to produce a single, citable rating for every smart home product we cover.
How is the SHE Score different from the Consensus Score?
The Consensus Score reflects expert review agreement — how many sources recommend the product. The SHE Score goes further by adding four proprietary dimensions: ecosystem compatibility breadth, setup ease, value-to-price ratio, and future-proofing (Matter/Thread support, local control). The SHE Score is a more complete product intelligence metric.
Can affiliate relationships influence the SHE Score?
No. SHE Scores are computed deterministically from expert consensus data and compatibility profiles. The computation is the same regardless of whether a product has an affiliate link. See our affiliate disclosure for full details.
How often is the SHE Score updated?
SHE Scores are recomputed every time product data is updated. Expert source data is refreshed at least every 60 days for fast-moving categories. Compatibility data is updated when manufacturers release firmware updates or new protocol support.
