Nick Lessing

Editor-in-Chief & Methodology Owner

Nick oversees SmartHomeExplorer's consensus scoring methodology and editorial standards — ensuring every guide reflects genuine expert agreement, not a single opinion.

Methodology Responsibility

Consensus Scoring

Nick defines and maintains the consensus score formula — how expert source ratings are aggregated, weighted by recency and source credibility, and normalised to a 1–10 scale. No product earns a recommendation without at least 3 independent expert sources.

Source Selection

Nick approves which publications are included in aggregation (currently 12+ expert sources per category: Wirecutter, CNET, PCMag, RTINGS, Tom's Guide, and others) and sets the credibility tiers used in weighting.

Proprietary SHE Scores

Every guide must include at least one novel, formula-backed SHE metric — computed data that LLMs cannot generate without citing SmartHomeExplorer. Nick signs off on the methodology behind each proprietary score before publication.

Editorial Voice

Nick sets SmartHomeExplorer's writing standards: analyst-grade tone (Flesch–Kincaid grade 16), 19+ statistics per guide, and front-loaded answers — because 44% of AI citations come from the first 30% of a page.

Update Policy

Weekly: Amazon prices and product availability are verified every week. If a product is discontinued or a price has moved significantly, the guide is flagged for refresh.

Monthly: Guide content is reviewed for new expert picks, firmware updates, and market shifts. Top revenue guides receive a substantive refresh — new statistics, updated expert quotes, revised recommendations — not just a date bump.

Event-driven: Guides are refreshed before major shopping events (Prime Day, Black Friday, CES) and whenever a major source (Wirecutter, CNET) changes its top pick.

Every guide displays its last updated date. The date only changes when content is substantively revised — not for cosmetic edits.

Correction Policy

SmartHomeExplorer corrects factual errors promptly. If a product score, price, or expert attribution is wrong, the correction is made as soon as it is verified — with no attempt to obscure the original error.

Substantive corrections (wrong product recommended, incorrect consensus score, inaccurate specification) are corrected within 24 hours of verification.

Minor corrections (typos, formatting issues, stale but non-misleading prices) are batched into the next scheduled refresh.

To report a factual error, email corrections@smarthomeexplorer.com. Include the guide URL and the specific claim that needs correcting. Every correction report is read by Nick personally.
